Sisyphean Web – Chrome Extension

Background: Challenged in my Creative Programming 2 course to create a Chrome browser extension that focuses on artistic erasure, I created The Sisyphean Web, meaning a task that can never be completed. The extension is inspired by the idea of abstraction in modern art, as well as Internet art.

Process: I chose to erase the explicit meaning of web pages through scaling all text and images until they became illegible and collaged. The idea is to replace the explicit meaning of the web pages with new, implied meanings built from the abstract results. Built in JavaScript, the extension adjusts the scaling amount according to the number of images on the web page.

Result: The result gives a new perspective to Internet art by directly and uniquely involving individual web pages. Scrolling acts as an interactive virtual gallery for the abstracted text and images, as the results vary as you scroll, acting as different pieces of art. Overall, this project expanded my knowledge in how to create a browser extension while also challenging my creativity to turn web pages into something thought provoking, artistic, and functionally different than originally intended.
