Floral Wonderland – Interactive

Background: In my intermediate Creative Programming course, we were challenged to experiment with body tracking in Processing.

Process: I chose to create an interactive experience using a webcam and particle systems. The code scans the pixel colors from the video feed and when it recognizes a significant change in a pixel’s color, it adds the particles from the particle system in that spot.

Result: The result is an interactive playground with flowers that tracks a person’s movements by placing flowers and leaves where there is motion. The plants are a particle system, so they eventually fall due to gravity. The goal is to give the user a fun, pretty, and interactive experience in which they have some control over how the plants appear and move, while keeping the movement of the plants as organic as possible to resemble real life plants. Users found the experience fun and relaxing. In the future, I would like to further experiment with this project and present it as an interactive installation in which the cameras are hidden, but track the movements and display the results on a projected screen.
